What is Kanopy and how do I get started using the service?


If you are interested in independent, international, classic, or documentary films, use your library card and last name to sign up for Kanopy, our on-demand video streaming service. Stream films from popular collections such as Criterion, The Great Courses, PBS, and more!

Get Started:

Kanopy is listed on the Library website under Digital Content found on the left-hand menu. Select Kanopy from the menu or bookmark the site directly at

Create a Kanopy account via one of the following three methods: Facebook, Google, or Email Address. Note: If you use Facebook or Google to sign in, you will not be able to use Kanopy's "Forgot Password?" tool. 

Log in with your information if you already have an account to Kanopy through the Contra Costa County Library. 

After signing up, you will be sent a verification email to your email address. This email will come from Click on Verify My Email to continue your account set up. Note: If you are not seeing this email in your inbox or spam, please contact Kanopy Support directly at

When you go back to the Kanopy registration screen, add and add your library card number and last name. Note: Contra Costa County Library uses last name instead of PIN. 


Frequently Asked Questions about Kanopy

How many titles can I watch?
You can watch a maximum of 8 videos per month. You will receive 8 play credits  per calendar month. Once you press play on a video, you will automatically use one (1) play credit.

What is the loan period?
Once you press play on a video, you will have 3 days (or 72 hours) to view it as many times as you like without using another play credit. If you would like to watch the same video after the 3 days have passed, you will use up another play credit.

Is there an app for Kanopy?
Yes, you can stream films from Roku, iOS, and Android devices using the free Kanopy app, which is available from your device's app store. 

Can you stream to your television?
Kanopy is compatible with the streaming services, Roku. Other alternatives to stream to your television include: Apple TV, Chromecast using an Android/Google device, or Connecting your computer to your television via HDMI.

Can visually impaired users access the films?
Yes, Kanopy's website and video player are both fully compatible with all screen readers on desktop browsers, as well as with iOS and Android devices.
